Minimally invasive surgery has evolved even further with the advent of Laparo-Endoscopic Single Site (LESS) surgery, a recently introduced approach in which complex laparoscopic procedures can be performed through a single skin incision that can be conveniently hidden within the belly-button leaving virtually no visible scar.
Through this surgical approach, the typical four small incisions for the endoscopes that are required in robotic laparoscopic surgery, have been reduced to only one incision. Single-port surgery allows for all four endoscopes to be used through just one opening in the belly button, thereby reducing both scarring and healing time required after surgery.
USC urologists pioneered LESS techniques in urology, including nephrectomy, partial nephrectomyPartial Nephrectomyremoval of diseased part of the kidney while sparing the healthy part , reconstructive procedures such as pyeloplastyPyeloplastycorrecting obstruction of the ureter and ureteral reimplantUreteral reimplantto treat ureteral strictureation, donor nephrectomy, and simple prostatectomy. In fact our surgeons recently published their experiences with 100 patients undergoing LESS urologic procedures, citing successful outcomes for the greatest number of patients throughout the world.
