The USC Experience

USC urologic surgeons are acknowledged world leaders in surgical and oncologic treatments for bladder cancer. Specifically, our team has the world’s largest experience with radical cystectomy and continent diversion for bladder cancer. USC urologists have pioneered various techniques and concepts of continent urinary diversion, high-extended lymph node dissection, and nodal density. Also, USC urologists were the first in the world to describe laparoscopic radical cystectomy with completely intra-corporeal orthotopic neobladder and ileal conduit, and now have one of the world’s largest experiences with robotic/laparoscopic radical cystectomy.

Our team has also pioneered and published several papers regarding the importance of extended lymph node dissections at time of surgery. Our extended lymph node dissection has resulted in both decreased cancer recurrence and improved patient survival. These innovative techniques have significantly improved patient outcomes and patient survival, leading to worldwide adoption. All forms of surgery are offered, including open and robotic options. As a result, USC is now a premier destination for patients seeking major surgery for bladder cancer.

Our prospective computerized registry contains detailed data on over 2,600 patients, arguably the most comprehensive and up-to-date bladder cancer registry anywhere. This information is used for our robust outcomes program to examine bladder cancer outcomes and quality of life in patients after treatment. USC urologic surgeons and medical oncologists work as a closely-knit team to provide optimal, individualized care for our patients with bladder cancer. We also have extensive experience in urinary tract reconstruction and patients are offered all forms of urinary diversion. USC was one of the first institutions in the world to offer orthotopic neobladder reconstruction in men and the first to offer such reconstruction in women.

We strongly believe in spending ample time with patients and their family in order to discuss their cancer diagnosis and treatment options. Family support is very important when making major treatment decisions. Cancer staging systems are explained using anatomic diagrams as well as the patients own radiological studies to show the extent of the disease and what surgical approach is used to eradicate the cancer. We believe that patient understanding of urinary tract reconstruction is key to successful outcomes in pelvic reconstructive surgery. It is crucial that patients also understand the complication rates and side effects for each procedure or treatment in order to make an informed decision.

At USC we offer:
• Radical Cystectomy (Open and Robotic Assisted laparoscopic approach) with orthotopic urinary diversion including nerve sparing procedures to maintain erectile function in men
• Transurethral surgery for bladder tumor removal
• Post radiation (salvage) cystectomy
• Chemotherapy options both instilled in the bladder and given systemically
• Radiation options
