The USC Institute of Urology’s Center for Female Urology provides a full-service female urology program, which includes behavioral, medical and surgical expertise. All modalities of minimally invasive continence and prolapse surgeries are performed, including transvaginal, robotic, and laparoscopic surgery for stress incontinence and various forms of prolapse. Our physicians also provide a full range of services for patients with neurogenic bladder, interstitial cystitis, pelvic pain syndrome, and voiding and sexual dysfunction. Another area of expertise is urethral diverticulum surgery for which patients are referred from all over the country.
Continence Surgery
Many factors can lead to the development of incontinence, such as multiple childbirths or menopause, spinal cord injury, back injuries, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. With proper treatment, the effects of incontinence may be significantly reduced or even eliminated.
Treatment options include medical, surgical and/or prosthetic alternatives. USC physicians were among the first in the country to use collagen injections, and we pioneered the use of new bladder pouches in the United States. The Institute offers a multidisciplinary approach to incontinence, bringing together urologists, gynecologists, reconstructive surgeons, gerontologists and rehabilitation physicians. A commitment to innovation and excellence, combined with ongoing research and teaching, keeps our surgeons and physicians at the forefront of their field.
Prolapse
A special expertise of USC urologists is minimally invasive surgical treatment for all types of pelvic floor prolapse. This includes prolapse of the bladder, urethra, rectum, and female organs. Scar-free surgical techniques such as trans-vaginal and single-port surgery are offered routinely to our patients.
Neuro-Urology
Patients with neurological diseases can experience problems with the lower urinary tract, leading to a condition called neurogenic bladder dysfunction. Symptoms can include inability to urinate, urinary incontinence, frequency and/or urgency of urination, urinary tract stones and frequent urinary tract infections. USC urologists provide treatment for this condition that includes medications, as well as minimally invasive and surgical options.
Interstitial Cystitis
Interstitial cystitis is chronic inflammation of the wall of the bladder, which can lead to scarring, pinpoint bleeding of the bladder wall and a decreased bladder capacity. USC urologists work to relieve these symptoms through various treatment options such as bladder distention, bladder instillation, medication and diet.
Female Sexual Dysfunction
Many women suffer from various degrees of sexual dysfunction. This condition is divided into four categories: sexual desire disorders, sexual arousal disorder, orgasmic disorder and sexual pain disorders. Depending on the type of dysfunction, USC urologists are available to tailor the best treatment option to fit the individual patient’s needs.
Urethral Diverticulum
Urethral diverticulum is a protrusion of the urethra into the anterior vaginal wall. Our physicians are experts in treating this condition, and patients are referred to USC from all over the country for our services.
