Pediatric Urology

Comprising one of the largest teams of its kind in the country, pediatric urology at the USC Institute of Urology is one of our elite programs. Our program offers the complete range of pediatric urologic surgeries from routine procedures to the most advanced reconstructive surgeries. Routine procedures include hypospadias, circumcision and hernias. Advanced procedures include complex reconstruction for congenital anomalies such as mega ureter exstrophy and fistulae prune belly syndrome. The latest minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgical options are offered.

Hypospadias

Hypospadias is a condition in which the opening of the urethra is on the underside of the penis instead of the tip. To correct this, USC urologists use tissue grafts to reconstruct the urinary channel in the proper position. This surgery successfully corrects 90 percent of hypospadias cases in one surgery, which typically takes place at or soon after six months of age.

Pediatric Laparoscopy and Robotics

As part of the minimally invasive surgery program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, laparoscopic and robotic surgery is available for various straightforward and complex pediatric urological conditions. USC urologists use these techniques to treat conditions such as undescended testis, intersex anomalies, adolescent varicoceles, uretero-pelvic junction obstruction, megaureter, and other forms of obstructive uropathy. Additionally, robotic and laparoscopic procedures performed include nephrectomy for poorly-functioning kidneys, as well as partial nephrectomy and nephro-ureterectomy for duplicated systems.

Pediatric Oncology

USC pediatric urologists provide expert treatment for various childhood cancers of the adrenal gland, kidney, bladder and prostate. A multi-disciplinary expert team comprising of medical oncologists, hematologists, radiation oncologists and social workers work cohesively to provide seamless care.

Pediatric Kidney Transplant

USC has one of the largest pediatric kidney transplant programs in the country, where we provide cadaveric and live donor options. Our physicians also perform dual kidney transplants and laparoscopic kidney donor surgery through the belly button in a scar-free manner.

Stem Cell and Tissue Regeneration

Funded by the National Institutes of Health, our stem cell and tissue regeneration laboratory is a unique USC Institute of Urology resource. It is ranked as one of the top laboratories of its kind in the world. We are currently focusing on cell therapeutics for tissue regeneration and tissue bioengineering research for the purpose of repairing or growing new organs, such as the kidney and urinary bladder.
